Practically everyone has heard that vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, improves human immunity. The properties of ascorbic acid are not only used in medicine. Vitamin C has a great influence on the proper functioning of the human body, because it takes part in many processes that take place in our bodies. However, this is not the only advantage of accepting this relationship. What are the properties of vitamin C and what will its regular intake give us?
Vitamin C has been widely used in cosmetology for some time now, mainly because it fights water radicals and thus prevents skin aging. Ascorbic acid also plays an important role in collagen synthesis. Collagen is a very important protein, which is responsible, among other things, for the elasticity and firmness of our skin. Unfortunately, after 25 years the production of collagen in the human body drops sharply. If you are struggling with many discolorations, it is also worth trying vitamin C. Currently there are many ampoules with liquid vitamin C on the market, which regularly used can have a very beneficial effect on our skin. Cosmetologists recommend the use of ascorbic acid in case of dilated capillaries, discoloration, acne rosacea, grey, earthy skin and loss of firmness of the skin.
Vitamin C has been used for many years for resistance. We often hear that in case of a cold or infection one should take vitamin C and the disease will disappear faster. American scientists conducted a study in 2007 that successfully dispelled this myth. The results of the experiment showed that taking vitamin C during the infection does not shorten its duration. If we took ascorbic acid regularly before infection, it reduces the duration of the cold by 8% in adults and 14% in children. What turned out to be interesting, however, was that Vitamin C significantly reduces the risk of infection for people who regularly train or practise professional sports.
Our body sends us various signals if it starts to lack a mineral or vitamin. What are the symptoms of vitamin C deficiency? Anemia, scurvy development, lack of appetite, weakness and rapid fatigue, bleeding gums, difficulty healing wounds, tendency to develop bruises, as well as muscle and joint pains. The body's vitamin C requirements may increase during prolonged physical activity. It is worthwhile to supplement vitamin C also in case of diarrhea and vomiting.
Our body may suffer not only from vitamin C deficiency, but also from vitamin C overdose. It is worth remembering that too high doses of ascorbic acid can lead to the accumulation of stones in the urinary tract, urinary acidification and gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea.
